I am not sure I'm able to recall exactly if age had precedence over gender or vice versa. There would naturally be exceptions, e.g. if anyone was sufficiently critical, they might be preceded by a herald who'd announce them; It might be rather distinct the herald was performing on behalf from the VIP, instead of on his personal behalf.
